Yesterday my cousin A and I were talking via instant messenger. She said she heard that we might be getting some snow.
HUH??? WHAT??!!!
There’s nothing like a good snow to snap this southern girl out of her winter blahs. And A was hoping we would get snow, too. She’s a school teacher, you know. Kindergarten to be exact. That’s enough to make a person pray for a freakin’ blizzard if you ask me.
Anyway…there we were. Two grown 30-something (*cough*) women praying with all of the might of an 8-year old for a snow day. Just like when we were growing up.
I remember the Best Snow Day Ever when I was growing up. I was in 5th grade and we really got a doozy that year. Mom came to rescue me and my best childhood friend from school. We got to check out of there early!! Bonus! The rest of the day consisted of snowmen, running around the neighborhood like Eskimos and lots of hot chocolate. And then we discovered that there was a huge ice “pond” out in the field (this was the big field at the end of our dead end street) so we neighborhood kids did what any normal Southern kids would do on a snow day. We put on our roller skates and went “ice skating”. You can stop laughing now. No, really. Stop.
But we have to be careful for what we wish for here. In 1994 we were hit with a crippling ice storm that put all of north Mississippi out of touch with the outer world for over 2 weeks. No electricity. Nothing to do. It was a real good time. And I know some of you Yankees are probably thinking we’re nuts for actually wanting snow, but we don’t hardly ever get to see the stuff. And if we do know it’s coming, you can bet school will close and the grocery stores will be slap out of milk and bread. I think that’s a tradition, too. Go raid the grocery store. Just in case.
But sadly, it was not to be. We did not wake up to a white blanket of good times this morning. It was cold. And dreary looking. I’m not giving up hope yet.

I had to smile when I read this….
My oldest daughter teaches kindergarten in Atlanta.
She was REALLY hoping for a “snow day” today!
And to think I woke up this morning and said, “Where’d all this white stuff come from?” Had to shovel myself out to get to yoga this morning. A pre-workout workout, if you will. Not that I’m trying to rub it in.
Good Morning Mandy,
Oh, how I wish we Southerner’s could get a good snow. I know the Northerner’s probably think we are crazy for wanting snow, but like you said, we very seldom get it and when we do get it, it’s always a welcomed sight. I remember yall getting the Ice storm in 1994. I think we had some Ice as well, but not like yall did. We did, however, have a bad Ice Storm in 2000, and electricity was out just about everywhere. My Dad had went and bought a generator a few days before, and at the time, my DH’S Grandmother had died, so we let the girls spend a few days with my Parents so they would have heat and stuff like that. I was “THANKFUL” we had a Gas Cook Stove to use for some heat. I love the snow, but don’t like the Ice. I remember when I was a girl and still in Elementary School, just about every year when it was time to go back to school from the Christmas Break, it would always snow and we would have some extra days off due to the snow. We didn’t get any snow the other night, just a cold rain. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours.
Hugs,
Karen H.
Growing up in North Dakota, I never once prayed for snow. It was NORMAL to get a foot of the stuff in a day, so school was almost never cancelled because of it. In fact, I only remember one “snow day.” We got 12 feet of snow in 24 hours. I guess when you can’t even open your front door THEN school officials think it’s worth maybe skipping a day.
Snow days when we were a kid were the best. Right now we have no snow in Toronto at all. Hope you get some soon!
Damn Delta weather. I did not even get my hopes up. I knew better. Luck for me, in ’94 my family was living in south MS, so I missed out. But, I was going through old pictures the other night and came across our blizzard of ’99. It was awesome!
It snowed up our way last year. But, it didn’t even make it through the night. I pulled the boys out of bed at 10:00 just so they could play in it… figured it was a once in a lifetime chance. Two weeks of the flu followed. Ug.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Too funny that my last entry (about my “no day”) and yours were so similar. Obviously, I totally get the wishing for snow. I’m all giddy tonight because we may get some tomorrow. Hope hope!
my husband and i are teachers and our wish of a snow day was granted on thursday!!! it was great!!
