The Big D

When I was pregnant with EB, I developed such a severe case of Gestational Diabetes that I had to give myself insulin shots for four months until he was born. I lost count how many times I poked myself, but it was 4 times a day for four months. That’s a lot of poking. After he was born, the diabetes magically disappeared and I was just told to be careful since GD can also lead to full blown diabetes down the road.

Only, I wasn’t careful. And I haven’t been taking care of myself at all since then. I had finally started feeling a little better after this flu/bronchitis bout but in the past couple of days just couldn’t get my energy back. I was extremely dizzy and just plain felt weird. It finally dawned on me today that this is exactly how I was feeling before I was diagnosed with GD, so I checked my blood sugar just to see.

272. That’s my blood sugar today. Way too high.

So I’ve stopped my RC colas cold turkey, have been drinking water, and am eating a salad for supper tonight. Looks like I will definitely be back at the doctor’s office on Monday morning. I shudder to think how high my blood glucose levels have been in the past few days, and could kick myself for not recognizing it sooner. I have no excuses. I knew better, but didn’t take this seriously enough.

So today’s post is a PSA to take care of yourself.

I too had gestation diabetes at the end of my last pregnancy. I never had to do the insulin injections, but just pricking my finger EIGHT times a day was horrible enough.

Hope you are able to keep things under control – this is a good reminder to me too, as a sit munching chocolates while I reply :)

I have been worried about this for myself. I am planning on having a variety of blood tests when I get my physical in another month. I eat way too much sugar. Take care of yourself!
